Bryn Athyn Summer Institutes are held on the beautiful campuses of Bryn Athyn College, the ANC Secondary Schools, and the Bryn Athyn Historic District, 1/2 hour north of Philadelphia, midway between the Willow Grove and Philadelphia exits of the PA Turnpike.

Advanced Beekeeping

Queen Rearing and Hive Splits

In this two-session hands-on course, noted beekeeper Jim Bobb will guide participants as they actively learn the more advanced skills of beekeeping. Session one will focus on raising queens and session two on splitting hives and purchasing new hives.

Advanced Stained Glass

Painting with Light Workshop with J. Kenneth Leap

Students study and create with stained glass artisan J. Kenneth Leap. Sessions include demonstrations of advanced medieval techniques, with an emphasis on pattern making and painting, as well as tours comparing the medieval stained glass collections in Glencairn Museum with the Bryn Athyn glass built into Glencairn and Bryn Athyn Cathedral.

Video Effects Boot Camp

Video Effects Boot Camp

An introduction to state-of-the-art software and the skills used in computer graphics imaging. Students will gain mastery of key processes used in image creation, capture, manipulation, and synthesis. Skills involve an intense focus on Adobe Photoshop, with an introduction to HDR, matchmoving, particles and effects, rendering, and other skills.

Stone Carving

An Old Craft in a New World

Jens Langlotz was recruited from Europe to repair and maintain stone work in the medieval style for the Bryn Athyn Historic District, focusing on Bryn Athyn Cathedral. In this hands-on course, he will share his knowledge of stone, along with carving and preservation techniques he has used on some of the most important buildings in the Philadelphia area.

Dance and Musical Theater

Students will learn from a variety of professionals in dance, acting, voice, and technical theater. Instruction will include master classes in technique and theory, workshops in specialized aspects of theater and dance, and rehearsals for the final student performance. For students of all experience levels.

Dance will include technique classes in classical ballet and contemporary styles, theater jazz and hip-hop, as well as instruction about dance history and styles.

Acting and Voice for Musical Theater will focus on character development and vocal production, using music and dialogue form popular Broadway shows of several different eras.

Students become lighting designers, sound designers, riggers, scenic artists, and prop masters. The Mitchell Performing Arts Center's equipment is used to help bring the final production of the Dance and Musical Theater class to life by creating environments and evoking moods with lighting and sound.

Students create a light plot, hand and focus it, and program the light board, as well as develop the sound plot and learn how to operate the sound board. They also use the theater's rigging system to enable set changes to happen quickly and learn color theory, paint mixing, and technique. The world of props is explored in the fully outfitted scene shop.

This course is for graduates of the Video Effects Boot Camp or students who have experience with Adobe Photoshop and video skills. Topics include: Final Cut Pro, editing and motion graphics, advanced composition tools, best standards for HD formats, working with different production principles, lighting, sound, and image control.

Afternoon Open Lab: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Morning and Evening Sessions: $175 each
Afternoon Open Lab: $15 per day

A variety of throwing and handbuilding techniques will be used to make vessels of all kinds. Issues such as containment, utility, and community will be explored. The class will use Cone 6 stoneware fired in electric kilns, though glaze firing will be limited due to time restraints. All skill levels welcome.

The Art of Beekeeping

A Hands-On Course for the Beginning Backyard Beekeeper

Eight Saturdays | March – May 2011

Students don the veil, grab a smoker, and practice on their adopted hive. Discussion topics include: anatomy and physiology of bees, the life of a bee from egg to flight, honey harvesting, and the role bees play in nature.

From the Garden to the Table

A Four Week Series on Garden Building, Maintenance, and Use

Whether you are a first-time or an experienced gardener, there is plenty to learn about the mechanics, sustainability, and aesthetics of gardening in this hands-on course. At the end of each class, students prepare a lunch from their harvest.

Week 1: Design and layout, soil preparation, and planting
Week 2: Water, pest, and weed management
Week 3: Growing techniques, pollinators and compatible animal husbandry
Week 4: Harvesting and use

Earn credit in either history or science as you tour various sites in and around London, including locations important for the study of both subjects. The trip is managed by EF Tours and employs professional guides at various locations, with additional content and instruction provided by history and science teachers from the ANC Secondary Schools.
